Digital transformation has become an imperative for all industries, and under the empowerment of nuclear energy technology innovation and AI application, the nuclear power industry is also entering a new stage of digital transformation. The "China Nuclear Energy Development Report (2025)" points out that AI and nuclear energy are showing a two-way integrated development trend: on the one hand, the nuclear power industry is actively promoting digital and intelligent upgrading, applying AI technology to engineering design and R&D, engineering construction, intelligent operation and maintenance, intelligent decision-making and other aspects; on the other hand, as a low-carbon, clean, safe and stable energy source, nuclear energy is increasingly favored by the AI computing power industry.
It is foreseeable that the integration of AI technology and the nuclear power industry will become increasingly close. Wang Binghua, Director of the Informatization Professional Committee of the China Nuclear Energy Industry Association and former Chairman of State Power Investment Corporation, said that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the digital transformation of the nuclear energy industry will enter a period of rapid development, and various scenario applications and innovative achievements will usher in a new stage of vigorous development. In 2023, the National Energy Administration issued the "Guiding Opinions on Promoting the Digital Transformation and Development of Nuclear Power", pointing out the direction for the digital transformation and development of nuclear power. The opinions require that on the premise of ensuring safety, we should further promote the application of cutting-edge information technologies such as cloud computing, big data, the Internet of Things, mobile Internet and artificial intelligence in the nuclear power field, and comprehensively improve the automation, intelligence and smart level of nuclear power design, manufacturing, construction, operation and maintenance, and management.
The primary consideration of nuclear power digital transformation is to enhance the safety of nuclear power units. Zhang Lin, Director of the Digital Engineering Institute of Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute Co., Ltd., introduced that through big data analysis and machine learning algorithms, real-time analysis and prediction of nuclear power plant operation data can be carried out to timely discover potential safety hazards, thereby effectively reducing accident risks and ensuring the safe operation of nuclear power plants. For example, the "Zhiyu Platform" released by China General Nuclear Power Group at the 16th China International Nuclear Power Industry Exhibition can capture 2 million data fluctuations per second, like installing an "electrocardiogram detector" for nuclear power plants, which can real-time monitor and analyze the status of unit equipment and production activities, and timely issue early warnings to operation and maintenance personnel and provide auxiliary decision-making.
Intelligent equipment is also playing an important role in nuclear power scenarios. Intelligent robots and automation systems can replace manual work in the special environment of nuclear power plants, realizing automatic refueling, intelligent inspection, underwater operations and other tasks, reducing the risk of operational errors and time costs, and thus improving the operational efficiency of nuclear power plants. At the 16th China International Nuclear Power Industry Exhibition, AI-driven nuclear power robots attracted much attention. On-site engineers introduced that the quadruped robot is equipped with robotic arms and sensors, which can replace humans to carry out detection work in nuclear power plants; at the same time, the built-in system predicts construction risks through AI, providing full-process protection for the operation process.
Domestic nuclear power enterprises are keeping pace with the times and beginning to deploy nuclear industry large models. In March 2024, China Nuclear Power Research Institute No.8 and Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory jointly developed the first nuclear field large model digital productivity platform "Longyin · WanJie". In February this year, the platform was connected to DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1, further improving its capabilities in complex information processing, logical reasoning and open-domain knowledge understanding, adding momentum to the digital and intelligent transformation of nuclear power enterprise operation management and production operation and maintenance. The application of digital twin technology has moved the nuclear power plant online. In December 2023, the first phase of the "Guohe No.1" digital twin nuclear power plant was officially put into operation, which is a digital nuclear power plant built relying on the full-plant 3D model, based on the industrial Internet platform and using an independent and controllable 3D engine, which can realize comprehensive business scenario applications such as intelligent monitoring, digital operation and intelligent maintenance. It is reported that the "Guohe No.1" digital twin nuclear power plant will realize the complete digital twin of the whole plant by 2025, fully realizing management digitalization and industrial digitalization.
